Iman

When did you realise you could sing?

I realised I could sing quite late actually. It was around the age of 15. Before then I always thought I had some type of voice but never really shared it with others. Then one day at school I was jamming with some friends and started singing one 702 song. My mates started going a little nuts and, from then and kept goin on about my voice. So then I started to think yeah I guess i can really sing!

What inspires you to sing?

I just enjoy singing and music in general. I am quite obsessed with it actually. I really believe with creative things like art drama music dance it chooses you, you don’t really choose it. It’s like you can’t help but do it. Just can’t leave it alone!

Where did you get your determination from?

I am a very ambitious person by nature so when I’m having a sh**ty time with the whole music thing I remember why I’m doing it and think of how I will feel when I get there. I also start looking at how I would feel if I didn’t realise all my hopes and dreams. I know how crap that would make me feel. That definitely gives me a kick up the backside!

Did you ever take singing lessons?

Yeah, I took lessons when I first started and still do. You’re always growing as an artist and I definitely feel I could still be better all round.

Why do you think it's important to learn about the music industry as an artist?

It’s so easy to get caught up in the whole creative side and forget this is a business that ultimately depends on how many units you are shifting. If you’re coming into the game more for your own personal enjoyment of making music for yourself I guess it’s not as important. However, if you’re looking to get signed or start your own label the business side will take up a lot of your time so obviously you gotta know your stuff.

Are you looking for a deal?

Yes, I am looking for a deal. I have been doing this for six years now and its hard but I believe in myself.

Who would you like to work with if you had the chance?

I would love to work with Salaam Remi. I love the s**t he has done on Lauryn Hills Album, Ms. Dynamites and on Amy Winehouse’s.

What are you working on at the moment?

Right about now I am writing for other people and working on new material for myself trying to hone my sound. I am also working on my craft, developing my keyboard and vocal skills, as well as my writing and performance.

What has been your favourite moment as a singer so far?

One of my favourite moments so far has got to be recording at Metropolis studios. I was laying down some guide vocals for one singer and had so much fun and learnt a lot from the others guys in the studio with me at the time.

What's coming up for Iman this year?

This year I hope to have developed a lot more on the whole. Actually pimp out my page as its looking dry! I should have more new tracks for myself and hopefully some kind of deal on the table.

Any encouraging words of advice for up and coming singers?

I used to think sayings along the lines of “perseverance and hard work pays” were just random saying of hope. But it is so true I know I ain’t hit the jackpot yet but things have started to happen as a result. I would also say to anyone trying to make things happen to believe in themselves. When you got that it’s like you got this fight and no one can stand in your way.

Well said!
